How to Send a Direct Message
Direct Messages (DMs) on Trendter are private, one-to-one text conversations. Here is how to start and manage them.
Starting a New Conversation
From a user's profile:
- Visit the profile of the person you want to message.
- Click the Message button on their profile page.
- Type your message in the chat window and press Enter or click Send.
From the Messages page:
- Click ✉️ Messages in your left sidebar.
- Click New Message (pencil icon).
- Search for a username and select them.
- Type and send your first message.
Message Rules
- You can message any user on Trendter — you do not need to follow each other first.
- Messages are private — only you and the recipient can see them.
- Messages are text-only (Trendter is text-first). You can use emojis.
- DMs respect the platform's Community Guidelines — no harassment, spam, or illegal content.
Managing Your Inbox
The Messages page lists all your conversations in reverse chronological order (most recent first). Unread conversations are highlighted with a bold name and unread badge.
💡 Tip: If someone sends you unwanted messages, you can block them. Blocking immediately stops all communication from that user and hides their messages from your inbox.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a character limit on messages?
Individual messages are limited to 1,000 characters. You can send multiple messages in sequence for longer communications.
Can I delete a message I already sent?
Message deletion is not currently available after sending. Think before you send — messages are permanent until this feature is added.
Are my DMs encrypted?
All DMs are transmitted over HTTPS and stored securely. Trendter staff do not read private messages except when legally required (e.g., valid court order or urgent safety situation).
Can I use emojis in messages?
Yes. Click the 😊 emoji button in the message composer to open the full emoji picker.
Why can't I message a certain user?
Possible reasons: (1) The user has blocked you. (2) The user has message requests disabled. (3) You have been blocked from messaging that account. If you believe this is an error, contact support.
Can I message someone who does not follow me?
Yes. You can initiate a conversation with any user, regardless of follow status. They may see it as a "Message Request" if they have that setting enabled.
Is there a read receipt (seen) feature?
Read receipts are not currently implemented. There is no way to see if your message has been read by the recipient.
Can I search within my messages?
In-conversation search is planned but not yet available. You can scroll through your conversation history manually.
What happens to my messages if I delete my account?
When you delete your account, all your messages are permanently deleted within 30 days. The recipient's copy of the conversation is also removed.
